January Showers bring May Flowers

Filed under: garden — cotterpinhouse @ 10:07 pm

I never thought I would utter that phrase in Wisconsin, but there it is- the last few days we’ve had thunderstorms rolling through the area. And while I would love to believe that this will be par for the course for the rest of winter, I know it’s just a cruel, cruel joke that Mother Nature is playing on all of us Northerners.

“What? You get a couple of days of spring weather, and you think you’re in the clear? Ha! The foot of snow I’m going to dump on you next week will wake you up from your spring gardening plans!”

Doesn’t help that I’ve received catalogs from two separate gardening supply companies urging me to ORDER NOW for the spring planting season…At least all those pretty, pretty, depressingbecauseit’llbesixmonthsbeforeIseethose flowers will help me to cross off one of this year’s house resolutions.

And I’ll just pretend that I’m getting a jump on planning my garden and flowerbeds as I try to ignore my frostbitten toes…

Avalanche of savings

At least from the Home Depot…. Yes, while we are receiving another 5 inches of snow, the Home Depot is sending me coupons for saving money on my spring yard needs.

Um, my yard is under 20 inches of snow.  Could you maybe contact me in another 5 months?  We can talk about pruning shears and grass seed then.

Those bugs ain’t no ladies…

Filed under: bathroom, garden, renovation, to-dos — cotterpinhouse @ 9:43 pm

We’re inching closer to finishing the bathroom- yesterday we actually bought the needed supplies!  Shocking, right?  Only how many weeks in the making?  So this upcoming weekend (how many times have I said that before? Seems to be a recurring theme) M & I are going to tackle putting the shower walls up….

I feel a bit like a slacker by using the pre-formed walls- because it’s not exactly keeping in the style of the house.  We made sure to get one of the more neutral shower wall sets, so I don’t think it’ll stick out- but my first choice probably would have been tiling.  The issues we’ve had with the glue that held up the plastic tiles kind of scares me though, and I’m afraid the compound and new tile would just pull away from the plaster.  And, if I’m honest, I might be a little worried about tiling a vertical surface (but it’s mostly that first one.)

In other news, we also picked up a new porch light that IS keeping in the style of the house.  That too will be put up this upcoming weekend- so lots of pictures coming soon.

Finally, the fake ladybugs are back.  For those who may not be blessed cursed with this minor infestation, don’t be fooled…They’re not your friendly every day garden variety of ladybugs- they’re Japanese biting beetles.  Beetles who seem to take a malevolent glee in getting into your house and flinging themselves at any bright light fixture they can find that happens to be near your head.  When they tire of that game, they proceed to either bite you, leaving strange little fake ladybug teeth marks on open surfaces of your skin- or prostrate themselves at your feet so you step on them and trail their gummy orange bodies all over your clean floors.  Heh…Yeah.  Fun.

Holy Halloween, Batman!

I’m so glad these monsters didn’t show up in our garden. The pic below is from an article in The New York Times.

All I can think of is hernia. (And how many Thanksgiving pies do you think you can squeeze out of one of those?)

What’s your impact?

Filed under: garden, renovation — cotterpinhouse @ 4:17 am

So, in my never-ending quest to save the world, or at least improve my little corner of it, I was looking up environmentally friendly building materials to use when we remodel the kitchen (and I’m kind of digging the look of recycled metal counter tops by the way).

Unfortunately, Wisconsin doesn’t seem to have as good of access to these cool green products as those on the East and West coasts. After all, can I really justify buying a recycled counter if I know how much fuel it took to ship it to me from Oregon? Yes, I know that the whole green movement is just starting- and eventually my area will catch up, but it’s still frustrating. The ReStore I’ve blogged about before is a good start, but we need more! More choices! At least more than what Home Depot or Lowe’s has been willing to offer us. Maybe I’m a bit naive, but I think a lot of personal home renovators in my area would choose the more environmentally friendly products if they had access to them- even if they cost more. I know I would. I guess selection is just hard to come by if you don’t live in a big city (or maybe I’m just not looking in the right spot!!!). Until the movement comes my way, I guess I’ll just have to make due on compact fluorescents, and buying sustainable products.

On a separate but related note, I also came across a pretty cool Living Impact Calculator (an email address is not needed, though it prompts for one). It’s a bit broad in how it calculated our output/results as our house is smaller than what it prompted, but it offered a ton of ideas on how to improve our energy efficiency, and the annual cost of savings we’d see by implementing the changes. Some of things suggested we’ve done: install a high efficiency furnace, install a low flow toilet, landscaping with climate-appropriate plants, reusing shopping bags- and to date, it looks like we’ve saved about $400. Pretty good!

And, a few of the suggestions for improvement are also on our to-do list: Install skylights, insulate the attic, start a compost, buy a hybrid (hint, hint, M). I’m not sure how I feel about buying carbon offset credits, or buying a gray water recycling system, but M is totally excited about retro-fitting our electrical system to use solar power. He keeps saying how neat it’ll be to see the electric meter run backwards in the summer…And, really, how can you argue with that?

I also wanted to recognize that today is also the official Blog Action Day. The hope is that if bloggers around the world all blog on the same day, about the same subject (specifically the environment), maybe some good will come of it. Here’s hoping!

Clearing out, and putting up, the cobwebs

Yard work…yard work…yard work…Just saying it makes me a little tired.

Normally I really enjoy gardening- it’s kind of become a new hobby for me over the past year because we were lucky enough to get a well-planted yard when we bought the house. For some reason I’m no good at keeping indoor plants alive (maybe because I forget they need water to live), but outdoor ones seem to grow like weeds (the rain probably helps with that). But getting ready for winter, well, somehow it’s not as much fun as getting ready for summer. Strange, huh?

So, tomorrow, I’ll be up to my elbows raking up the newly fallen leaves (thank you huge, mature, maple trees outside our house), planting the spring bulbs I bought, cleaning up our porch, pruning the roses, and pulling weeds. Yay! So much fun! Luckily the weather’s been cool but nice, and the colors are near peak and beautiful.

After that- the Halloween decorations go up. M loves Halloween- so we’ve got usual assortment of goodies, including a yearly costume for Stella. Last year it was Yoda, this year it’s a pumpkin. Yeah, it’s corny, and it usually only stays on about 15 minutes before she starts pawing at it-but the pictures are one of the best parts of the holiday.

Guess who was woken up to take this pic?

A Bust (this time around)

Filed under: garden, renovation — cotterpinhouse @ 8:31 pm

And no, not that kind.

The ReStore for Habitat for Humanity I had talked about here. M & I went this morning and checked it out. While I’m sure it’s great for other rehabbers looking for deals- it didn’t really have anything we could use. Most of the stuff there was used- doors, sinks, even toilets (eww)- and they did have a few new things, like cabinet pulls, hinges, ductwork, etc. Nothing really fit with what we’re looking for in regards to the kitchen, upstairs, or even bath.

Meh. Maybe next time….

In other news: My bulbs came yesterday! An hour or two of digging in the dirt, and voila! Hello spring!

Cross it off the list!

Filed under: garden, renovation — cotterpinhouse @ 4:41 pm

Ok, so I underestimated how long the bathroom trim would take…and the other repairs I would have to do because of the new trim.  But we’re about 98% complete-  just one more piece to put into place and a nice final coat of paint, and we’re good to go…(pun intended)

I also tackled the yard again this weekend-  specifically the planting of a new “Limelight” Hydrangea bush I talked about on my other blog here.  I also pulled out a ton of weeds (thistles anyone?) and mowed the front lawn with our new push mower.  My family teases me a bit  lot about that purchase- I guess my dad used one back when he was a kid to mow his parent’s lawn-  but I like it.

I get the extra exercise to justify having ice cream when I want it.

I save the gross national product of small Eastern European country in gas.

It’s eco-friendly-and we like looking like wannabe hipsters.

It’s quiet (so if I feel the need to go mow the grass at 3am I can)

If you squint when you see me, it sorta looks like I’m riding around my yard on a Segway.

And I don’t have to furiously pull like a madwoman to get it to turn-over and start.  (Our gas mower is finicky and I guess I don’t have the right touch…)

So- join the revolution- or feel free to laugh at me from your riding mower.  Whatever…
